We've been silent for a while but we're almost ready to re-launch this year with new things for 2014. We look forward to sharing and collaborating with you all again. We've been quite busy and we apologise for being off the radar, and for ignoring e-mail and requests. 2013 was a pretty long year for us both, but we're starting a new mini-project in which we'd love and appreciate your participation.
Meanwhile, continue to bear with us - we really love your support. Thank you for sticking with us!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8031399569795094731.post-56952921973339323512013-11-27T07:13:00.002-08:002013-11-27T07:13:42.228-08:00Fun Crab Alert!

‘Fun Fun One Crab On The Run’is a beautiful, imaginative and useful new children’s board book for age range 3-6 that has just hit the Caribbean market. Published by Little Bell Caribbean (New York), it is the latest title by best-selling author Mario Picayo, who selected Grenadian illustrator Stacey Byer to create the illustrations. “I was attracted to her use of colour, playful style, and the humor I saw in her work,” explains Picayo, who met Stacey during a visit to Grenada in 2012.

This delightful counting book for young readers follows the characters as they explore, swim, fly, and blossom, while simple rhymes connect the numbers on their journey from one to ten. It is a perfect tool to introduce children to numbers. A chart at the end of the book lets the reader know the name (common and scientific) of each real Caribbean animal and plant included in the illustrations, and turns the book into a “find it” game.
The book is already available on the American market and may be purchased online at Amazon.

The official Grenada launch for the book (a kid friendly event) will take place at the Grenada National Museum on November 30th, 2013 from 4:30 to 6:30 pm. To promote the value of art and literacy to early childhood education in Grenada, there will be a presentation on reading picture books, illustrations on display, as well as copies of the Fun Crab Books for sale.

In addition, November is Picture Book Month and to honour this, the illustrator is donating 150 copies of the book to pre-primary and primary schools in Grenada. This is being made possible with the generous assistance of a number of corporate sponsors, including NAWASA, SouthernElectrical, EcoDive, Country Cold Store, 3BS, Grenada Pharmacies, Wade Optical, Island Dental, Spice Isle Retreaders, Grand Anse Playgroup, and Sweet Water Foundation, as well as personal contributions from individual donors. The distribution of these books will be facilitated by the Ministry of Education post-launch.

It was important to Byer that the book has a wide circulation so that Grenadian children have access to the book. “I often try to include a community element with my art events,” says Byer, who also co-curates the Women Make Art show. “I think it’s important to showcase art’s wider links to society, culture and education. Art is essential, not just ornamental.”

This free event is open to the general public.

Many of our local (Grenada-based) artists who do not normally work small have approached us to relax this restriction to allow them to participate. We have heard you and have decided to adjust our submissions as follows for exhibition submissions!

Grenada-based women artists may submit pieces larger than 9" x 12" and local 3D artists may now submit work. Please submit all final artwork dimensions with the online submission.

For 3D works, all dimensions are needed, as well as how you intend to display it.

Overseas-based artists are still under the 9" x 12" size restriction.

Submissions that do not meet our guidelines will not be considered.

The organisers will not accept liability for any damages to artworks that are damaged during shipment. This is done at the artist's risk only.

Online submission deadline is still February 29, 2012.

Please see our full call here and remember to submit when you have all the information and work is finished. What a tremendous show! We got over $15,000 EC in sales so that gave us enough to give over $2000 to our Grenada National Organization of Women (GNOW) charity, and over $700 to the Alliance Francaise and over $1500 to the Grenada Arts Council. Great huh? I think we did well for a first run didn't we?

“Women Make Art!” (WOMA ’11), Grenada’s first ever women-themed art exhibition featuring women artists exclusively will be held at the old United Travel Agency Building, #9 Young Street, St. George’s, from March 11th – 25th, 2011, in honour of International Women’s Day (March 8th, 2011). The exhibition will feature paintings, photography, sculpture and three-dimensional works from Grenadian and Grenada-based women artists.

The WOMA Committee, comprising established and upcoming members of the local art community, conceived the exhibition as a way to contribute to the educational development and cultural enrichment of artists, art lovers, and help raise awareness of women’s issues in Grenada. As an event in commemoration of the 100 year celebration of International Women’s Day, WOMA ’11 will be listed as an event along with over 1000 other events worldwide.

Held under the auspices of the Alliance Française and the Grenada Arts Council, the exhibition brings together communities of artists, both professional and emerging, while engaging other members of the Grenada community. The artists seek to harness visual media to explore and promote the support of women’s issues. For this reason, a portion of the sales proceeds will be donated to Breaking Barriers. Breaking Barriers is a project run by the Grenada National Organisation of Women (GNOW) to help abused women acquire skills that will enable them to be a viable part of the workforce.

The theme of the exhibition is simply “Women”. With more than 30 artists signed up, the organizers hope that this will be a success so that future events can be held, making the event an annual one. One of the main event organizers, Stacey Byer, is a young artist who says, “Through art we can address important social issues and supporting women in need is such a worthy cause.” Another committee member, artist, Tracey Chan says, “This is an exciting time in the Grenadian art society – we are looking forward to doing more, making more and getting people interested in new things.”

Opening night on March 11th will feature a special silent auction of an art piece donated by Carina Andrew, the proceeds of which go to Breaking Barriers. The exhibition opens at 6:30pm, March 11th, 2011, and runs until March 25th. Hours of operation will be 10 am – 6 pm. There is no admission fee and donations are accepted.
